Whether you're renting or buying, if you're considering a move to the Central or Eastern VA area or planning on it already, there are a lot of great online resources to help smooth your transition so that you can be informed in advance before even visiting there. Below I focus on mapping resources.


With any Google maps below, filter the sections based on what you're looking for on the top left.


While the link above showcases a broader view of SE VA, the map below focuses on TripAdvisor city/county Rankings for Virginia Beach, Norfolk, & Chesapeake on the right & for all of Virginia on the left on the date of pulling the data. For other nearby areas, see the link in the description of this section.


The plain blue section is highly rated free things to do:

The below isn't exhaustive, but has many more than the above.


The 1st 9 of 10 sections are mostly free, or have very cost-effective free options. The 10th section is paid options.

Those sections are:

  1. Free Boat Ramps & Launches (including kayaks only)

  2. Fishing Free &/or Free Beaches (fishing license required typically)

  3. Free Parks, Natural Area Preserves, Wildlife Management Areas ($4/day for permit, $23/yr, but also available free w/ various options like freshwater fishing license, boating license, hunting license, or trapper license), & Historic Sites

  4. Hunting Free for those w/ Hunting License or Very Low Cost (i.e. $25/yr) (WMAs & Wildlife Refuges)

  5. Free Camping & Free Overnight Shelters (or w/ WMA, $4/day for permit, $23/yr)

  7. Free Trail/Hiking

  8. Free Sports & Community Centers Freely Accessible to Residents

  9. Libraries, Museums, Ferries, Areas with a wide variety of options, Memorials, Attractions, & Other Free Amenities

  10. Paid Attractions & Amenities w/ no free options (or very limited free options)


Free or Heavily Discounted for Disabled &/or Poor
